Thanks Shandy.
I'm intrigued by this KPI because of its simplicity, elegance and potential power, but I'd hate to see it ruined by a gaming affliction.

My CI, by the way, is very bad - just under 1 which would indicate that my blog barely has a heartbeat. ;)

Cynical is not the right word, more like experienced and practical. When you mentioned gaming I also thought of hits. Thanks for the response.

Shandy, excellent question - thank you.

For your average individual blogger trying to understand/quantify how engaging her/his blog is this indeed would be self-destructive so I agree with you there.

However, IMHO, when your dealing with a KPI that could be tied to revenue - Engagement has been discussed as a metric to use in terms of how to sell advertising in the Social Media Landscape - then for those interested in making money and lacking a certain amount of scruples, gaming the metric becomes attractive - just as hits were gamed WAY back in the day.

Am I too cynical?

I have a question about the Conversational Index and why someone would want to game it. As you said from a technical point of view, a analytics program could possibly remove all trackbacks and comments from the author.

As this is a statistic which could assist the blogger to determine the natural engagement of his blog, wouldn’t gaming it be a self-destructive act?
